Three love poems

I

I thought I was a man of worth,
respected, listened to,
and though my burden of regret I’m sure
weighed no more than is normal on this earth
I tried to bear it straight and true.

But you, for motives careless or impure,
answering my uncertain call
reached out and by a finger’s touch upset
with stolen love the balance of my life, then calmly let
its fine construction fall.

II

My mind is filled
with thoughts of you tonight
as though a tide had swelled
a quiet cove
with a dark inexorable love,
moon-governed, moon-bejewelled,
which now at its engulfing height
refreshes my resolve
to win the joyful prize for which I fight.

III

Why do blue sky, clouds and rain
stand for so much in us,
seem to contain
our fleeting happiness,
all pleasure and all pain?

I note how, for example, this dull day
has settled over me as if that ray
of hope had never shone
and never, now you’re gone,
will shine again.
